Funeral Call To Worship {adapted from John 14}

It’s been a crazy year for funerals around here (I usually average 1-2 a month and I have done eight so far this year with some coming up this weekend) and I have had the opportunity to work with some really amazing families on services for their loved ones.

A few weeks ago I was sitting with one of my church members putting together a service for her sister.  She asked me if we could open the service with John 14, “In my Father’s house, there are many dwelling places.”  I decided to use that scripture to write this responsive Call to Worship.  I’ve used it at one or two services since then!  Feel free to use it in a service you have coming up.

Call to Worship | Funeral or Memorial Service (Based on John 14:1-7)
Sarah E. Weaver (c) 2015

Jesus said:
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled.
Believe in God, believe also in me.’
We believe in Jesus Christ,
whose resurrection gives us eternal life.
Jesus said with blessed assurance:
‘In my Father’s house, there are many dwelling places.’
Dwelling places prepared for us, children of God.
Jesus promised:
‘If I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again and will take you there myself,
so that where I am, there you may be also.’
We give thanks for the promise
that when it is time for us to leave our earthly lives,
Jesus carries us home to be with God.
Jesus said:
‘You know the way to the place where I am going,’
but Thomas had doubts:
‘Lord, we do not know where you are going.
How can we know the way?’
Jesus said to him:
‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.’
We gather today to celebrate life
and to bear witness to the resurrection.
Thanks be to God!

  1. My wife’s sister died and I am working with the pastors to help prepare portions of the memorial service. I looked at literally hundreds of texts for calls to worship and found none suitable. Then, I found your March 5, 2015 one that was much better than any. It is outstanding and beautifully written. Thanks! We will use it since it is so superior and you said to fell free to use it with full credit.
I see your theology degree is from Emory. I have my J.D. degree from Emory.I listened to your all saints sermon and believe you as good preaching as writing and “that is saying something”.
My wife and I now live post retirement in the mountain area of NE Ga. For a year we attended the church where Barbara Brown Taylor preached. You have her touch.
