I really loved the way last night’s altarscape came out.
If you read my sermon, you know that the inspiration for this came from the Green Day song, 21 Guns, and the line, “Your faith walks on broken glass.”
I grabbed some white plates at Savers and … well … smashed them with my friends. So much fun! I would recommend it even if you don’t have an altarscape to put together!
This is the leftover Christ candle from the Advent wreath. I put it in a glass vase and then poured black sand around it. It really ended up looking neat!
The oil is in the vessel closest to us. I used almond oil that I had leftover from an anointing a did a few months ago and put it in the vessel so it would look nicer.
To get the different depths I put some wooden blocks at different heights on the altar and then covered everything in fabric. I put a deep purple fabric down first and then a black on top of that. I also raised the cross, because I did not want it to get “lost” on the altar.
Ash Wednesday really is one of my favorite services throughout the year and I love the way the altar turned out. I have a feeling the broken glass will make a few more appearances throughout the Lenten season. Now I just need to find a way to store it!
