Last year during stewardship I preached a sermon on visions. I dressed the altar with empty frames and told the congregation at the end of the sermon that they got to decide what went in them.
I hung onto the frames after I used them in worship, with no specific use for them in mind. I am glad I did, too, because on Saturday night I had an idea.
I put the frames back on the altar, this time filling two of them with pieces of poster board.
During the children’s sermon I had the kids tape photographs from the last year in those two frames. I told the congregation to rejoice in all that we accomplished in the past year – but to still rejoice in the empty frames. The empty frames may not hold photographs – but they do hold possibilities. Thanks be to God!
